Find the Right Mount for Your Device

Dockem wall mounts and car mounts use a two-bracket cradle system that adjusts to your device's width, letting you mount in portrait or landscape without any extra cases or attachments. This guide covers the key specs to check before you buy.

Device Thickness

This is the single most important measurement. Check the total thickness of your device with any case you plan to leave on:

  • Up to 11 mm – Original Koala Mount, available as a separate adhesive version or screw-in version
  • Up to 13 mm – Koala Mount 2.0, with both 3M Command Strips and screws/anchors included; rubber spacer pads (2 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm) help fill extra space for a snug, secure fit with thinner devices
  • 14 mm to 22 mm – Koala Mount 2XL, with both 3M Command Strips and screws/anchors included; rubber spacer pads (2 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm) help fill extra space for a snug, secure fit with thinner devices in that range

Only the Koala Mount 2.0 and Koala Mount 2XL include rubber spacer pads. They help fine-tune the fit for thinner devices within each mount's pocket range. The original Koala Mount versions do not include spacer pads.

Surface Compatibility

Adhesive Koala Mounts use 3M Command Strips. The original Koala Mount adhesive version is designed for smooth, flat surfaces, while the Koala Mount 2.0 and 2XL include Command Strips alongside their screw-in hardware. The strips are rated at up to 5 lbs each and are not suitable for textured walls, wallpaper, or areas with regular moisture or heat exposure (such as near a shower or stovetop).

Screw-in Koala Mounts use included self-drilling drywall anchors and screws. The original Koala Mount screw-in version is sold separately from the adhesive version. The Koala Mount 2.0 and 2XL include this screw-in option as well as 3M Command Strips. A hammer and Phillips-head screwdriver are all you need for most drywall installations. Studs or other wall materials may require a drill and alternative screws.

Car mounts (Magno Mount 3.0 series): The DashPro uses a gel suction cup for dashboards and must be mounted on a relatively flat surface. The DashMini uses a 3M VHB adhesive base rated for smooth, hard surfaces — dashboards, cabinets, walls, and headboards — but not soft vinyl, leather, silicone, or rubber. The VentPro clamps directly onto horizontal vent slats and is not intended for vertical or highly curved slats.

Minikin: One Magnetic Mount for Wall or Car

The Minikin uses a 3M VHB adhesive base rather than a damage-free Command Strip. It can mount a smartphone to smooth, hard surfaces such as smooth plastic, finished wood, paint, glossy tile, walls, cabinets, dashboard consoles, and headboards. It is not recommended for soft vinyl or leather dashboards, silicone, or rubberized surfaces. If using it in a car, let the surface cool before use after the vehicle has been sitting in heat.

Its extra-strength magnetic head holds the included metal plates and swivels for placement flexibility. Use the included micro plate or mid-size plate, or pair it with a Dockem M-Series case, sold separately, which has an integrated metal plate designed for Magno Mount 3.0 compatibility. The M-Series case option gives you a cleaner everyday setup than attaching a plate directly to your phone.

Installation Method

  • Adhesive (damage-free) – The original Koala Mount adhesive version uses 3M Command Strips. The Koala Mount 2.0 and 2XL also include Command Strips, so you can install either one without tools or holes on a suitable smooth, flat surface. The strips remove by stretching off.
  • Screw-in (permanent) – The original Koala Mount screw-in version uses its included drywall anchors and screws. The Koala Mount 2.0 and 2XL include the same screw-in option alongside their Command Strips for a more fixed installation.
  • Magnetic – Magno Mounts require a compatible metal plate on the phone or case. The included micro plates measure 12 × 40 mm and can sit near the top of the phone to help avoid blocking Qi wireless charging. The included mid-size plate measures 35 × 45 mm and can sit between the phone and case for a more hidden fit. For the cleanest setup, Dockem M-Series cases, sold separately, have integrated metal plates designed for Magno Mount 3.0 mounts, so you can mount without adding a separate plate to the case.

Portrait vs. Landscape Rotation

All Koala wall mounts support both portrait and landscape orientation. Because the two brackets are set independently, you space them to match whichever orientation you choose. Note that on smaller devices (7–8" tablets like the iPad mini), landscape mode can place the bracket supports over side ports on the regular Koala Mount  — the Koala Mount 2.0 or Koala Mount 2XL are the better options for these devices.

Tablets vs. Laptops

The Koala Mount 2XL is the only mount in this collection designed for laptops and tablets or phones with larger, thicker cases. Its 22 mm pocket accommodates devices up to 22 mm thick and is compatible with iPad Pro 12.9", MacBooks, and a wide range of Android tablets and laptops. All other Koala Mounts target smartphones and standard tablets up to 13 mm thick.

Weight Capacity

Each 3M Command Strip in the adhesive mounts is rated to hold up to 5 lbs. Because tablets and phones weigh well under that threshold, weight is not a limiting factor for any device in the supported thickness ranges.

Keeping Your Device Secure

Gravity holds your device in the bracket pocket. On the Koala Mount 2.0 and Koala Mount 2XL, the included rubber spacer pads reduce lateral movement when your device is narrower than the pocket. The original Koala Mount versions do not include spacer pads. For a fully locked-in setup, a second set of Koala Mount 2.0 brackets can be positioned above the device to prevent removal — useful in kiosk or shared-use scenarios.
